It came out great, here’s what Sean from Daytrotter had to say about it:

“…. These are people who enhance life not make it a bear. They reinforce the simple life, for this Sacramento, California, songwriter, who’s obviously a hopeless romantic, as she’s likely to remain always.

Her songs are special in the ways that they get us to those places that feel like they’re untouchable. The people in them are fighting the good fight, trying to get through to the ones that they love that it’s all going to be alright, that they’re going to be able to get past all of those monsters that they have to deal with in their dreams, that they’re going to be alright if they’re just able to give themselves over. They will be caught. There’s nothing to worry about. It’s not a trap. There’s not a lot being asked here – by anyone.

Bee’s voice is one that we trust as a narrator. It grabs us and it guides us to these wind-whipped souls who have seemingly washed up into the right arms at last. They’ve never asked for much and they’re asking for the same here, as Bee sings, “Kiss me once or twice/Maybe I could die happy as a bird.”

We did a cover of John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane” as a b-side after we finished up recording on Orangefarben. But, it came out really cool and we decided to put it on the album. But, we had added one new line to the lyrics, so we had to get permission from John Denver’s estate. Well they said yes, and in fact the liked it so much that they are releasing it as a limited edition 7″ for record store day. The flip side is “Take Me Home, Country Roads” featuring Priscilla Ahn’s electronica Japanese translations produced by Mike Andrews.

http://www.npr.org/2010/12/07/131780224/discussion-the-year-in-music-2010

The death of Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous earlier this year left a hole in my heart, and Sea of Bees came along just in time to put a Band Aid on it. Julie Ann Bee, the band’s sole member, makes songs imbued with the same spirit as Sparklehorse’s — music that’s dark but uplifting, gritty but elegant and richly textured. Bee possesses one of the most distinctive voices I heard this year, and her debut album under the Sea of Bees moniker, Songs for the Ravens, was in heavy rotation in my music library for months. Years from now, I think it still will be.

Favorite New Artist: “Sea of Bees is just one woman — Julie Ann Bee or Julie Baenziger. I just love the sort of gritty, dark, ambient feel of this whole record. Her voice is lovely; it’s really strong, but rough around the edges, and the album is strong melodically too. I think a lot of albums that strike tones like this tend to have mumbly, monotone melodies and singers, and she’s not afraid to stretch it out.” –Robin Hilton

Last September we did a short acoustic in-store performance at London’s historic Rough Trade West shop just off Portobello Road in the Notting Hill district. It was hella fun!
We were super surprised and flattered when the choose Songs for the Ravens as their album of the month!
Here’s what they had to say about it and some pix from their two stores.

sea of bees – songs for the ravens
rough trade exclusive with a bonus 5 track cd, featuring alternate, early versions of some key album tracks:
under this aptly delicate moniker, multi-instrumentalist julie baenziger, aided and abetted by producer and studio hand john baccigaluppi have created an album as spare as the emotions that are so adroitly expressed within – a perfectly pitched, muted masterpiece built of acoustic guitars, gentle backing and baenziger’s clear bell of a voice. the innocence, honesty and purity of intention that flows throughout here manifests itself compositionally and technically – a beautifully crafted, emotionally mature debut that would be beguiling enough, even if it were not for the fact that baensziger played every instrument heard.
sea of bees – bee eee pee
rough trade exclusive with a bonus 5 track cd called ‘bee eee pee’
which features some of the tracks that are on the album but these are completely different recordings. she did this before the album so its nice to see how the tracks became fully realised.

“Sea of Bees out of all of [the bands with Bees in their name] is probably my favorite of the bunch. See of Bees is essentially one woman, Julie Ann Bee and she’s from Sacramento, CA. If I had to sum her up in a sentence, she’s sort of a female Sparklehorse. Her music is rooted very much in folk and rock but wildly experimental; some crazy, beautiful, wonderful sounds on her new album Songs for the Ravens. It will probably end up on my top 10 for the year.” Robin Hilton, NPR radio host
